Pathology

Overview

Welcome to the Pathology Department of Butaro Hospital. The Pathology Department is a 24 hours working laboratory. All laboratory tests requests are received during working hours, night duty hours and during the weekend. The staff of the laboratory is composed of 10 laboratory technicians and 3 specialists (surgical pathologists). Our laboratory is engaged in the process of quality improvement and accreditation with the WHO Stepwise Laboratory Improvement Process Towards Accreditation (SLIPTA). The capacity of the laboratory has significantly improved since 2012 and we are able to perform routine clinical pathology lab tests and we are a referral lab for histopathology and tissue diagnosis for 10 district hospitals in the country. We also support other university teaching hospitals in Rwanda in providing second opinion for tissue diagnosis through our expert reviewers from our partner, the Department of pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Boston.

• BCR-abl1 molecular testing with GeneXpert BCR-ABL ULTRA Assay
• Immunohistochemistry

• Tuberculosis diagnosis with Auramine stain and molecular testing with GeneXpert MTB/Rif Assay
• Microbiology

Contribution to teaching

Our department is contributing to teaching for students of medicine at University of Global Health Equity (UGHE). We are also a rotation site for MMed postgraduate pathology residents from University of Rwanda/School of Medicine and Pharmacy as well as students from Biomedical Sciences from the Institute of Applied Sciences (INES-Ruhengeri).
