Overview

After the hospital's groundbreaking ceremony took place in 2008, led by Burera District officials and former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Butaro Hospital was inaugurated on January 24, 2011, by His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, alongside late Dr Paul Farmer, a co-founder of Partners In Health that supports to the maximum the hospital operations. The only district hospital in Burera District was established to provide quality healthcare services to communities in the Burera District and beyond.

In July 2012, in collaboration with Partners In Health (PIH), the hospital launched the Cancer Center of Excellence with diagnosis and treatment services, making it the first and only facility in Rwanda to offer comprehensive oncology services. This milestone positioned Butaro Hospital as a critical institution in the fight against cancer, providing specialized care to patients across the country and the region.

In 2022, the Official Gazette of the Rwandan Government published the designation of Butaro Hospital as a Level Two Teaching Hospital. This upgrade aimed to enhance treatment, medical education and training, facilitating the learning process for students from various institutions, including the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) and the University of Rwanda, among others.

We take pride in our highly qualified professionals who deliver our mission every day, translating their knowledge and expertise to internationally compliant practices in healthcare provision. Courtesy, consideration and unreserved respect towards our patients’ privacy, dignity and confidentiality have helped us earn their trust and goodwill time and again. Our dedicated nursing staff provides professional care within a friendly and comfortable environment, ensuring a pleasant and anxiety-free time in hospital for our patients and their families.
