Strengthening Quality Treatment Through the Microbiology Laboratory at Butaro Hospital
In a significant stride toward improving patient care and advancing clinical services, Butaro Hospital established a state-of-the-art Microbiology Laboratory that is now playing a critical role in strengthening quality treatment and combating infectious diseases in the Northern Province and beyond.
The Microbiology Lab, launched as part of the Partners In Health’s commitment to support and strengthening high-quality provision and evidence-based care, has become a cornerstone in the accurate diagnosis and effective management of bacterial infections. Prior to its establishment, clinicians at Butaro Hospital often had to rely on empirical treatment due to the lack of microbiological testing—posing challenges in diagnosing infections and selecting appropriate antibiotics.
Physicians at Butaro Hospital are now equipped with reliable culture and sensitivity testing, allowing them to identify the specific pathogens causing infections and determine the most effective treatment. This shift from empirical to evidence-based treatment has significantly improved patient outcomes, especially in cases of complicated infections, surgical site infections, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
“Having access to microbiology testing has completely changed the way we manage infections,” says Dr. Pascal Bihizimana, an internal medicine specialist at Butaro Hospital. “We can now prescribe antibiotics with greater confidence and precision, reducing the risk of resistance and unnecessary medication.”
“By providing culture and antibiotic susceptibility testing, the lab supports the hospital’s antimicrobial stewardship efforts, ensuring antibiotics are used responsibly and only when necessary.” Françoise Nyirahabihirwe, a microbiology lab manager, added.

Furthermore, the lab collects valuable data on local resistance patterns, which informs treatment guidelines and public health responses in the region.
Beyond diagnostics, the Microbiology Lab is also contributing to the professional development of healthcare workers. Laboratory technicians have received specialized training in sample processing, quality control, and biosafety. Collaborative efforts with national and international partners, mostly Partners In Health, continue to strengthen local capacity, ensuring sustainable service delivery.
As Butaro Hospital continues to grow as a center of excellence in healthcare, specifically in Oncology services, the Microbiology Laboratory stands as a powerful example of how targeted investments in diagnostic infrastructure can transform patient care and public health.
